Gillies began her acting profession at 12 by attending local casting call. The path to becoming an actress began early when she started attending the local open casting call. Gillies played a regular role for the show The Black Donnellys in three episodes. She has stated that she was not permitted to watch the final show as a whole because her parents believed it was not suitable for her in the moment. In 2008 she appeared in small roles in the show The Clique, Harold, and Locker 514. Her role was announced in this summer's season as Lucy and Ariana Grande, who was her co-star from Victorious, for Jason Robert Brown's musical 13. In the fall of that same year, 13, that was the first Broadway musical that was entirely composed of teenagers, relocated to Broadway. The show featured two huge number "Opportunity" and "It Can't Be True" and smaller parts of other numbers, such as the title song, "Hey Kendra" and "Getting Ready". Gillies continued working on the series until it ended on January 4th, 2009.
